Big Turnouts Highlight First Weekend of Chiefs Camp

Three of the most successful days of Chiefs Training Camp came in the first week at Missouri Western.
(ST. JOSEPH) Family Fun Day, Season Ticket Holder Appreciation Day, and the first public practice have traditionally been three of the biggest gatherings at Chiefs Training Camp.

Those all came within the camp's first four days this year, meaning a busy opening weekend at Missouri Western. Over 5,100 people attended practice on Sunday after a record crowd of 6,200 on Saturday.

"We've packed in four good days here on the first weekend," MWSU Athletic Director Kurt McGuffin said. "We hope the next weekends bring just as many people, but a lot of times it doesn't, especially when the exhibition games start."

As crowds are expected to dip during the weekdays, the Chiefs will hold one more practice on Monday at 8:15 a.m. before taking their first day off on Tuesday.

Rookie linebacker Dee Ford continues to impress with his progression over his first seven days of training camp. As a first-round pick, many fans have thought him a natural replacement for Akeem Jordan, who signed with the Redskins this offseason, to step into the starting unit with Tamba Hali, Justin Houston, and Derrick Johnson.

Defensive coordinator Bob Sutton says he likes a strong rotation off the bench, but is keeping that possibility open.

"I am sure down the road we are going to try and figure out a way to get all those guys on the field," he said. "They are all good players. Obviously it would gives us the ability to rotate which is really valuable because it gives us a chance to re-gas up and get ready to go. And I really think it will be a positive thing for us."

Safety Eric Berry practiced despite dislocating his finger on Saturday. Right tackle Donald Stephenson left with an ankle injury, while tight end Travis Kelce did not practice as his reps continued to be monitored coming off surgery.
