(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Students at Pickett Elementary School in St. Joseph took part in a surprise assembly Monday to recognize their counselor.

Deanna Kelley recently earned a spot among the top school counselors in the United States. She was named as a semi-finalist for American School Counselor of the Year.

Students and faculty congratulated her with an assembly, then sent her off with some gifts from each grade.

Mrs. Kelley will travel to Washington, D.C. this week to be honored with the other finalists.

She is no stranger to awards though. Last year she was named Missouri's Counselor of the Year.

"Last year, I won Missouri School Counselor of the Year. So, each state counselor goes into a pot and they kinda pick some of them out and I made the top 14," said Kelley.

The ceremony takes place Friday in Washington, D.C.
