(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Bundled up runners turned out in droves for the 2013 Turkey Trot at St. Joseph Frontier Casino.

Among the trotters were the Running Red Birds, an after school club ready to put their 12 weeks of cardio training to the test.

"It's going to be a wonderful memory, I've got a big goal for this race but i don't know if i'll succeed or not but it'll be worth a try," Brooke McCloud said.

Fourteen Pickett Elementary students attempted the 3.1 mile race

Fifth-grader Anna Bracciano met her goal for her first 5k

"I wanted to run the whole way and i did it and i got 36 minutes," Bracciano said.

The club has kids from every fitness level.  They started training by running for just thirty second chunks, then gradually added time until they reached a thirty minute run.

"Some people like could barely run in the beginning and watching them run the whole thing was really cool," Lydia Grier said.

The Running Red Birds train twice a week after school and track their progress with the couch to 5k app. And they're getting more out of the program than just improved fitness.
