(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) A $65,000 donation changed hands at Heartland hospital Wednesday.

The money went to Second Harvest Community Food Bank. The donation is enough to provide 250,000 pounds of fresh produce to the food bank's clients.

Heartland's board of trustees approved the donation following a community assessment survey that looked at ways the hospital can help improve the health of the community. The findings included tackling obesity and providing access to healthy food in under-served areas.

"We saw an opportunity to turn the tide with Second Harvest Food Bank, and the donation we're going to make today is going to be used to provide 250,000 of fresh fruits and vegetables," said Heartland CEO Dr. Mark Laney.

Second Harvest distributes food through the Backpack Buddies program, Fresh Start and the Regional Fresh Produce Distribution program.
