(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) A local group is asking residents to come together and welcome immigrants in the community.

Interfaith Alliances for Immigrants held a prayer service at First United Methodist Church on Thursday.

They keynote speaker was Carol Barton from the United Methodist Women.

She addressed how to support immigrants and families and why it's important to welcome a stranger.

Group members say there's a number of reasons why it's important to tie faith to welcoming immigrants.

"Economic or hardship or opportunities. That's our history as a nation, that's our history as a people, of a human family," said David Howery.

Interfaith Alliances for Immigrants holds a yearly prayer service.

The group hopes the community can support one another and continue develop their message.
