(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Shaun Agnew has acted in plenty of plays before, but his newest role is different from any other.

Agnew is preparing to be Shrek in the Robidoux Resident Theatre rendition of Shrek: The Musical.

"To be able to have the opportunity to take on the title character and all that goes with it, especially how I look right now, but to have that challenge and that journey is really exciting," Shaun said.

Agnew portrays an ogre with a heart of gold, who finds love in an unexpected place.

But this story has a quirky detail that mirrors his real life.

Princess Fiona - the princess in the story, and Shrek's love interest is played by Shaun's real wife off the stage.

And the couple met doing plays together!

"We're kind of a quirky couple and these people are quirky too," Shaun said.  "They have their warts - Shrek's warts are fairly obvious - hers are not at the beginning of the show.  It's been wonderful to share that experience with her."

Jessica Agnew agrees:

"I think I like most girls have my own fairy tale and want life to go a certain way," she said.

Her real life fairytale came meeting Shaun while in another show.

She says this is the first time they've played opposite of one another.

"This is the first time to have the chance to interact this closely and I love it," Jessica said.  "This is where we met and this is what we love to do.  And who knows if we'll ever have this opportunity again."
Show director Carol Myers says the whole cast has worked hard to get Shrek together for the RRT.

Myers also said that the Agnews' marriage was not a factor in getting cast as the main characters.

"We had some very talented people that could have easily had those parts as well," Myers said.  "You just look for that something special that separates them from the rest.  That's who you go with."

What they went with is two leading actors with good on-stage chemistry.

"It was just easy for us to find those connections of having that compatibility: the times that we're feisty to one another and sarcastic and able to laugh in the end.  That's how we really are," Jessica said.

Her husband says that natural chemistry easily bleeds onto the stage.

Shrek: The Musical runs at the Missouri Theatre Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm, and on Sunday at 2:00pm.
