Gordon “Cork” Edward Hopkins, Sr., 77, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Sunday, February 9, 2014 at Heartland Regional Medical Center.
He was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on October 26, 1936 to George T. and Mary A. (Gisebert) Hopkins, Sr.
On September 30, 1960, he married Beverly Shaffer in St. Joseph. She survives of the home.
Gordon was a member of Ashland United Methodist Church and a graduate of Lafayette High School, St. Joseph Junior College, and the University of Missouri in Columbia.
Upon graduation, he served three years in the Army Security Agency in Fort Devans, Massachusetts. After his service term ended in 1962, they returned to St. Joseph where he joined his father at the Jamieson Machine and Industrial Supply Company. He continued operating the business after the passing of his father in 1970. His son, Ed, and grandson, Justin, also joined the business.
Gordon was a member of the Host Lions Club, past member of the finance committee at Ashland United Methodist Church, and member and past president of the Friday Morning Breakfast Club. He was an Eagle Scout and belonged to the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. Of his 30 earned badges, he was most proud of his “God and Country” medal. He was Grand Master in 1995, Grand Lodge, A.F. & A.M.; Worshipful Master, Charity Lodge No. 331, A.F. & A.M.; District Deputy Grand Master, 9th Masonic District; Member, Committee on Chartered Lodges, Grand Lodge; Member, Committee on Ways & Means, Grand Lodge; Member, Masonic Home Board, Grand Lodge; Venerable Master, Lodge of Perfection, Valley of St. Joseph, Scottish Rite; Venerable Master, St. Joseph Consistory, Valley of St. Joseph, S.R.; Designated as a K.C.C.H.; Elected to 33o; Member, Mitchell Chapter No. 14, Royal Arch Masons; Member, St. Joseph Council No. 9, Royal and Select Masters; Member, Hugh de Payens Commandery No. 4, Knights Templar; First & Second Ceremonial Master, Moila Temple, AAONMS, (Appointive); Outer Guard, Moila Temple, AAONMS, (Appointive); and Member, Moila Country Club Executive Committee Chairman.
Gordon was a devoted father and grandfather. He was especially proud of his family. He enjoyed coaching his son in youth baseball. He loved attending his grandchildren’s events and was always in attendance for football, basketball, soccer, and baseball games. He was known to many as “Cork” and, in fact, some only knew him by that name.
Gordon was a successful businessman. He was generous and thoughtful. He never forgot a name or face once he met a person.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, George T. Hopkins, Jr. and Walter M. Hopkins; and niece, Lori Bixel.
Survivors: wife, Beverly; son, Gordon “Ed” Hopkins, Jr. and his wife, Cindy; daughter, Cindy Humphreys and her husband, William; five grandchildren, Justin and Courtney Hopkins, and Jared, Kyle, and Elena Fox; sister, Mary Alta Bixel and her husband, John; sisters-in-law, Wanda Hopkins and Carole Hopkins; and many nieces and nephews.
Services: 10:00 A.M. Friday, Ashland United Methodist Church. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. Masonic service 4:30 P.M. Thursday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory.
