He was born March 10, 1923 in Horton, KS, son of Loreto and Efren Martinez.
He retired from Swift and company when they closed then retired from the St. Joseph School District. He enjoyed all sports, bowling with the Knights of Columbus, horseshoes with the Guadalupe Men's Club, he also loved the Royals and the K.U. Jayhawks. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council #571 and St. James Catholic Church.
Gustavo was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Casimen Martinez, Abe Martinez, and Bennie Martinez, a sister, Socorro Vallejo, his 1st wife, Marjorie L., and a son, John Chavez.
Survivors include wife, Esperanza "Hope" Hope Martinez of the home, stepchildren: Jesse (Lois) Chavez of St. Joseph, MO, Delores (Walt) Myers of Kansas City, MO, Ramona (Bill) Atkinson, Larry (Linda) Chavez of Kansas City, KS, Margaret (Walter) Imm of Smithville, MO, Daniel (Pam) Chavez of Gardner, KS, Frances (Craig) Wahlert of St. Joseph, MO, Mary (Steve) Merritt of Amazonia, MO, Tom (Marolyn) Chavez of St. Joseph, MO, 21, grandchildren, numerous, great grandchildren, 1/2 brothers, Joe Rodriquez, and Richard Rodriguez, both of Rockford, Il, brothers, Efren Martinez and wife Maria, and Angel Martinez both of St. Joseph, MO, and 1/2 sisters, Josephine Dittmer of Phoenix, AZ, and Lupe Sandwick of Rockford, IL.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 5, 2014, at 10:00 AM at the St. James Catholic Church, Father Evan Harkins Celebrant. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Friday at the Rupp Funeral Home. The Interment will be at the Mount Olivet Cemetery.
