Major Vernis R. “Dick” White, USMC (Retired) 89, Saint Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2014 at his residence.

Dick was born December 22, 1924 in Clarksdale, Missouri to Gilbert and Flora May (Bartlett) White.

He attended Cameron High School and graduated from University of Southern California.

Dick served his country for 42 years, first in the United State Marine Corp from 1942-1958 and then the United States Army from 1958 -1984. Dick was a lead officer with the Los Angeles Police Department and later served as a detective until his retirement. After his retirement, he was the Director of Public Safety and Emergency Management Coordinator for the city of Commerce.

On September 11, 2013, Dick was selected for the honor flight to Washington D.C.

Dick married Cecelia Ida Rose on June 20, 1999, she survives of the home.

Dick belonged to the Ashland United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the United Methodist Men’s Group. He was also a member of Sertoma Club of St. Joseph, Moila Shrine Temple 32 degree, American Legion Post #359, Military Officers Association of America and Charity Lodge .

Dick was preceded in death by his parents.

Additional survivors include son, Nick (Sian) Robertson; stepsons, Bill Rose, Bob (Kim) Rose; sister, Meredith Winningham; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two nephews.

Services 11 am, Thursday, May 1, 2014 at Ashland United Methodist Church. Visitation will begin after 12 noon, Wednesday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, St. Joseph, Missouri, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm Wednesday evening. Interment Amity Cemetery, Amity, Missouri.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Ashland United Methodist Church Building Fund.
