Velma Carter, 96, died June 11, 2014 in Saint Joseph.

Velma was the only child of Ray and Lena (Pew) Thrasher, born at their farm home near Barnard, Missouri, on February 15, 1918.

She attended Maple Grove School, Barnard High School and Northwest Missouri Teachers College.

On September 16, 1939, she married Harry Charles Carter at Savannah, Missouri with Reverend Loomis officiating.

Velma and Harry were farmers in the Barnard and Bolckow, Missouri area for many years. After Harry’s death in February 1988, Velma moved to Savannah, Missouri. She volunteered at the Senior Center and the food pantry in Savannah and joined the Jolly Music Makers and the Jubileers singing groups. She was a member of the Sew-More Club, greatly enjoying their work and the meetings at the Savannah Christian Church. She moved to Saint Joseph in September 2007.

Three sons were born to them: Donald Carter, Livermore, California; Dennis Carter, Clearwater, Florida; and Darrell Carter, Livermore, California.

Other survivors include five grandchildren: Amy Bradley, Napa, California; Ryan Carter, Norfolk, Virginia; and Brent Carter, Portland, Oregon; and Laina and Whitney Carter of Livermore, California. There are five great-grandchildren, Luke and Jena Bradley, of Napa, California; Barrett and Emily Carter, of Norfolk, Virginia; and Cozette Carter, of Portland, Oregon.

Celebration of Life will be 2:00 PM Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Breit–Hawkins Funeral Home; Savannah, MO. Interment will be in Barnard (American Legion) Cemetery, Barnard, MO. Public visitation and family receiving hours 6 to 8 PM Friday, June 13, 2014 at the Funeral Home.
