Vernon E. Hollenbach, 93, Saint Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, May 19, 2014 at a local health care center.
Vernon was born December 18, 1920 at the farm of his grandparents, Frank and Josephine (Sayles) Monahan. He lived in Andrew County until his graduation from Savannah High School in 1939. At that time, he went to San Diego, living there until his return to Missouri in 1979.
Vernon was an elementary school teacher in California for about 25 years. During World War II, he was in the army, serving in North Africa and Italy.
Vernon was a member of Saint Mary Catholic Church and the National Teachers Association.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mary (Monahan) Hollenbach; brother, Francis; and an infant sister.
Survivors include several cousins, Steve (Cheryl) Elliott, Jane O’Connor, Ned Hollenbach, Polly Willis, Eileen Willis; nieces, Francine Hollenbach, Margaret Ann Rios; and a great-nephew, Matthew Rios.
Memorial Mass 10 am, Friday at Saint Mary Catholic Church in Saint Joseph. Parish Rosary 9:30 am, Friday at the Church. Mr. Hollenbach has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Private family inurnment will be held at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials be made to Saint Mary Catholic Church.
