Walter D. Smith passed away March 27, 2014 at the Gower Convalescent Center in Gower, MO.

He was born in Kansas City, KS in St. Margaret’s Hospital to Walter and Mary Fedora Smith.

Walter attended Lowell Grade School, St. Peter’s Cathedral Grade School, and Bishop Ward High School, graduating in 1956. He joined the U.S. Navy immediately after graduation and served 4 years in communications. After basic training at Great Lakes, IL, he attended radio school at Bainbridge, MD. For his first station, he was sent to a communication facility in Sidi Yahia, Morocco which served the fleet in the Mediterranean Sea. Later he spent 18 months aboard the seaplane tender, USS Albernarle stationed out of Norfolk, VA. The ship operated up and down the east coast stopping at ports such as: Quebec, Canada, Nova Scotia, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Virgin Islands, Port Au Prince, Haiti, Puerto Rico and Kingston, Jamaica. In May of 1989, Walter moved to Dearborn, MO. After 30 years of service, he retired from Deluxe Check Printers of Lenexa, KS. Walter was later employed at Tank ‘n Tummy Truck Stop from 1994 to 2001, where he worked the night shift. Walter’s pastimes included studying the history of Dearborn and photography.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 sisters, Betty Pearce and Rose Daniels.

Walter is survived by: his daughter Melissa Smith of Dearborn; 5 grandchildren, Megan Ashley, Christie, David Paul, and Sharon; and 3 great grandchildren, Mason, Hayden, and Bailey. Following cremation, graveside services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 4, 2014, at the Dearborn Cemetery.
