Wilma Ferne Chapman was called home June 30th 2014 by her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. She was born on July 3 1916 to Burt and Hattie Midyett in Parnell, MO. Ferne and her sister Maxine ran off together to marry their husbands Donald Woodson Chapman and Oreo Vincent Beatty in a double ceremony on August 10, 1935. Ferne and Donald went on to have two children Donna Kay (Richard) Garrett of St Joseph and John Burton (Jean) Chapman also of St. Joseph. Ferne lived a very full, interesting, and active life. Her work included traveling to Washington with her husband to pick apples one season, Quaker Oats, Jenny Lynn Bakery, and Katz Drug store downtown where she managed the cafeteria for 20years when she retired at age 68. After retiring she continued working with her daughter at her restaurant, Garrett’s Grill, for some time.
Several of her grandchildren, nieces and nephews worked with her at Katz on Saturdays and summer vacations learning the importance of hard work. Ferne stayed active well into her 90’s by walking a couple of miles a day at the mall, low impact aerobics and visiting with the “Old Folks” at the nursing homes with her sisters and friend Irene.

Ferne had three brothers, Junior, Jim, and Eldon. All three preceded her in death. She always enjoyed their dry sense of humor. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Vernice and Maxine.

She is survived by two sisters Estelee and Iola. She enjoyed bus trips to Branson, eating out, and games with her sisters.

She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church since April of 1947. She was very active in her church, singing in the choir, Sunday school and finishing her years off in the back row right side pew.
She read her red leather Bible every night before saying her prayers on bended knee beside her bed. We always had extra people at holidays that had nowhere else to go and extra plates to fix to take to those who couldn’t get out. She was never one to tell you what to do but taught you by quiet example her entire life. Stay busy, be kind to others, work hard and love God with all your heart.

Preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Donald, and grandson Chuck Garrett.
Survived by daughter, Donna (Richard) Garrett, son, John (Jean) Chapman, 7 grandchildren 14 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
