The YMCA signed a contract with Progressive Community Services and Unlimited Play to begin work on the 10,000 square foot playground. Located on the Y's North Shoppes campus, the playground will be designed to accommodate children and families.
The entire playground will be accessible for children and their parents, grandparents or caregivers. The design will be based on the idea of a whimsical jungle theme.
YMCA CEO Mark Cartledge described the playground as all inclusive.
"It's important that everyone recognize that this not a playground for children with disabilities. This is a fully accessible playground. So this is about inclusion. This is about all children playing together no matter what their disability or non-disability might be," he said.
The YMCA will operate and maintain the new playground. Cartledge hopes it will be ready by next June.
Progressive Community Services is now accepting donations for the project and will soon have an online page for donations.
