(WASHINGTON) Memorial Day weekend brings increased awareness on veterans at the same time many high school graduates begin the next phase of their lives.

One St. Joseph student is combining those two as he accepts a nomination to join the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D) has nominated Central High School student Nicolas Russell for the prestigious academy.

Russell is and Eagle Scout, President of the French Club and participates in the International Baccalaureate Program. McCaskill said Russell represents the best of Missouri.

“Missourians everywhere should be proud of students like Nicolas and their families for showing such dedication and commitment to serving our great nation,” said McCaskill, a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. “His leadership and courage showcase the patriotism and sense of duty that run deep in our state.”
