(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) City leaders have joined the fight against child abuse.

During a ceremony Friday at East Hills mall, St. Joseph City Councilwoman Donna Jean Boyer read a proclamation from Mayor Bill Falkner.

The announcement declared April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in the city.

The St. Joseph Youth Alliance worked with the city to make it happen. The group's executive director says child abuse is a big problem in the area and it needs to be addressed.

"Buchanan County has one of the highest rates of child abuse in the state. And, so, it's definitely something that we need to make sure people are aware of, and that we all work together to help really adress the issue because we want all of our kids to be safe," said Robin Hammond.

Families and child abuse prevention advocates from the Youth Alliance joined Boyer for the proclamation.
