Polar Plunge Raises More than $50,000 in St. Joseph

The Special Olympics of Missouri celebrates with cold, hard cash after dozens braved the icy edges of Lake Contrary last weekend.
(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) The Special Olympics of Missouri celebrates with cold, hard cash after dozens braved the icy edges of Lake Contrary last weekend.

The annual Polar Plunge raised $56,713 in St. Joseph on Feb. 15.

More then 250 "plungers" took part in the event locally, kicking off the event with a parade of costumes. The water temperature was near freezing the day of the plunge.

The top group, Abby's Too Cool Krewe, brought in $8,679 for the fundraiser. The top individual, Mary Oyler, raised $8,122.37.

The money helps athletes take part in various events all year long through the Special Olympics of Missouri.
