The KVC Readies Foster Kids for School

125 foster kids in Brown, Atchison, and Doniphan counties in Kansas will have all the necessary supplies for this upcoming school year.
(ATCHISON, Ks.) A big, green tractor stood in front of the Atchison, KS Wal-Mart on Saturday to be filled up with school supplies for foster kids.

"We want them to be proud, to show up on the first day with a nice backpack and have the supplies they need to be successful in school and do their work," said KVC Supervisor Carrie Freeman.

With the next school year right around the corner, foster parents are doing what they can to provide school supplies for their kids and the KVC in Atchison has stepped in to help.

"They would a lot of times step in and buy all the school supplies for the children in their homes.  But it's a tough job and an expensive job so we want to do everything we can to support the foster families as well as the children in their home," said Freeman.

The KVC is determined to keep their relationship with the foster parents a lasting one.

"We try to help them out around school supply time and around christmas time to take some of the burden off of them.  Because they're being wonderful enough to take our kids in so it's important to give back to them," said Family Service Coordinator Brianna Howell.

Wal-Mart shoppers were happy to give bags of school supplies while others were happy to just give cash.

"Even if you don't feel like going shopping or if it's difficult for you to go shopping.  If you want to donate the money, we'll go shopping for you.  We just want to do the best we can for our kids in care," said Howell.

During this time of year, it's almost like a mid year Christmas for the kids.

"They're always really excited to see what they've got and it helps boost their confidence and their self esteem," said Howell.

While the KVC equips foster kids with school supplies, they are also equipping them with the tools to prosper in life.

"Just get involved with our kids, our kids are our future and they're who we should be taking care of and who we should be helping to have a hand up in life," said Howell.

If you would like to donate school supplies there are KVC offices in Atchison, KS and Hiawatha, KS that are available at all times.
