Ross Resigns as Benton Boys Basketball Coach

George Ross Jr. steps down after leading the Cardinals to an 11-64 record over three seasons.
(ST. JOSEPH) George Ross Jr. has stepped down as Benton Boys Basketball Coach as announced by school principal Beery Johnson on Monday.

Johnson, along with athletic director Mike Ziesel, said the decision was Ross' and that he had not been let go. He plans to remain at the high school as a teacher.

He took over the Cardinals in 2011 after eight successful seasons at Atchison High School in which he led the Redmen to two Kansas State Final Four appearances.  Benton could not find that same success under Ross, compiling an 11-64 record in his three seasons as head coach, which included three first-round exits in district play. His final game was a 56-50 loss to Smithville last Monday.

The search for his replacement will begin immediately.
