Calloway Ready for Next Step Toward Olympic Qualifier

Chase Calloway's win on Saturday in St. Joseph marked his 100th career fight.
(ST. JOSEPH) Since taking up the sport as an eight-year-old kid, Chase Calloway has been carrying a name synonymous with boxing in St. Joseph.

He got an opportunity to fight in front of some familiar faces for the first time in his hometown on Saturday.

"It was a big step for me, fighting someone older," he said. "I wasn't expecting it to be that fast."

"Fast" means a first round technical knockout of a 30-year-old opponent in the Lafayette High School senior's 100th career fight.

"It's always good to fight in front of my family and friends. Some of them, it was the first time they've ever gotten to see me."

Calloway's 89th victory was part of a fundraiser for Lafayette High School at MEGA Gymnastics in St. Joe. Those friends and family that came out to see him saw that he's been putting in work.

"When I first started, my goal I set for myself was the 2016 Olympics. It's a very achievable goal."

Chase's father, Rob Calloway, who fought in the 1992 Olympic Trials, says his son is on pace to carry the family name right past his own accomplishments.

"I had 20 pro fights and I couldn't beat Chase," he said. "Right now, I mean, he's an 18-year-old kid."

"I'm just trying to be just as good as him," Chase added. "He set the bar high but I'm ready to go above and beyond."

But if a spot in the 2016 Olympics is the goal, Rob says his son must take his sparring beyond Missouri to destinations including Las Vegas and Philadelphia, where he did much of his training.

Chase's first shot to qualify for the games comes in January in the 2014 USA National Championships in Spokane, Wash. But, even if he doesn't make it to the XXXI Olympiad, his father feels he's got plenty of time.

"I would love to see him finish college and try for 2020 if he doesn't make it in 2016," he said. "But right now, 2016 looks pretty good."
