Cardinals on Brink of Elimination after Loss

A 5-3 Pirates victory puts St. Louis in a 2-1 hole in the NLDS.
(PITTSBURGH) Carlos Beltran did what players and fans have gotten used to: he delivered in another postseason performance.

The veteran drove in all three of St. Louis' runs on Sunday, bug the Pirates got to Joe Kelly and Carlos Martinez as they grabbed a 5-3 victory in game three of the NLDS.

The loss puts St. Louis in a 2-1 hole, one game away from elimination. It's the first defeat in five games for the Cardinals at PNC Park.

Kelly pitched 5 1/3 innings in the start, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out five batters. Marlon Byrd got to him first, driving in Andrew McCutchen and Justin Morneau with a single in the first inning.

Beltran knocked a two-run single of his own to tie it 2-2 in the fifth. He'd knot it again in the eighth with his 24th homer of the year, making it 3-3.

Pedro Alvarez and Russell Martin tagged Martinez (0-1) with the last two RBI of the game to deliver the Pirates victory.

Francisco Liriano gave up two runs on three hits and picked up five strikeouts through six innings.

Michael Wacha takes the mound Tuesday in game four against Charlie Morton with a 2:07 first pitch.
