Chiefs Rookies Ready in Temporary Home at MWSU

The Kansas City Chiefs rookies, coaching staff, quarterbacks, and injured players move in to Scanlon Hall at Missouri Western.

(ST. JOSEPH) For Dee Ford and the Kansas City Chiefs rookies, it's back to school.

"I can feel the football atmosphere here. The humbling dorm room just reminds me it's time to work," he said. "The key to surviving dorm life is: Don't survive. Make it fun. You're not  surviving if you're having fun."

He and his fellow first-year players, quarterbacks, injured players, and the coaching staff moved into Scanlon Hall on the Missouri Western campus on Sunday in preparation for the start of training camp.

"It's been a while since I've been in a dorm but it's not too bad at all. The good thing is we don't have roommates," quarterback Aaron Murray. "It's a great opportunity, so I just think all us rookies are just excited to be here, get out there, compete, and have some fun."

But head coach Andy Reid, known for his upbeat practices, knows this week is about much more than fun. His team is just six months removed from blowing a 28-point lead to the Colts in the AFC Playoffs. An offseason spent reviewing, scheming, and remembering is ready to be put on the practice field.

"We weren't good enough last year. We made some strides but we weren't good enough," Reid said. "The guys know that and they came into the offseason looking forward to getting better."

That's what the next three days are all about: getting in, getting acclimated and getting ready before veterans arrive on Wednesday.

"I'm ready to go, like you guys are, and the fans. There's just a certain feel you get this time of the year. It's time to roll."

It's the start of the end of the Chiefs' camp contract with MWSU, and the question hs already been floated: Will Sunday mark the last time the Chiefs move into the campus dorms? After the fifth year of the contract is completed, the team can renew on a year-to-year basis. Reid wouldn't speak to talks between them and the school. He's focused on getting his new weapons ready for Week 1.

"I'll leave that up to Mark (Donovan) and Clark (Hunt). They do all that part of it, the negotiation part. But, the people here, I can just tell you, have been phenominal."

The first closed practice starts at 8:45 on Monday morning. Fans can attend the first full-squad practice on Thursday.
