Chiefs Working to Return Training Camp to St. Joseph

Chiefs President Mark Donovan said Thursday the team's priority right now is to work with Missouri Western to bring training camp back in 2015.
(KANSAS CITY, Mo.) Chiefs President Mark Donovan said Thursday the team is working to keep training camp in St. Joseph.

The Chiefs just finished their fifth and final year of their current contract with Missouri Western. The team now has a series of one-year options they can pick up over the next five years.

With the contract being a talking point all summer, Donovan spoke to the media about camp for the first time this preseason at the team's kickoff luncheon at the Kansas City Downtown Mariott on Thursday.

"Our focus right now is to work with St. Joe and to work with Missouri Western to make sure we can continue there," he said. "We feel very positive that we'll be able to do that."

Donovan said he and Clark Hunt met with MWSU President Dr. Robert Vartabedian and athletic director Kurt McGuffin during training camp about what needs to be addressed on campus, which includes the practice fields.

"We are excited to go back to St. Joe. I think there's a very positive outlook for St. Joe. You look at the benefits the camp has brought to the region, not only the economic benefit, but the brand prestige of St. Joe. We hear a lot: 'St. Joe's on ESPN because of the Chiefs."

Donovan said the plan is to keep camp in Missouri and that other suitors have reached out to the Chiefs, but MWSU and the team facility in Kansas City remain the top two choices.

"One of the real benefits of training camp at Missouri Western is the college structure. The dorm life, the cafeteria, everything is convenient. You're in this secluded place where you can get your work done. Coach (Reid) has commented that that's a real benefit."

Clark Hunt addressed the media early in camp and said the decision will not be made until late in the season.

"I mentioned earlier this summer it's something we want to do by the end of the year," he said. "We'll be in discussions with the university and be able to meet that timeline."
