In front of 5,345 fans, a Phil Welch Stadium record, the Mustangs pounded the Clarinda A's 13-3 in the regular season home finale on Saturday. Now with a 2 1/2 lead on Chillicothe in the division, the Mustangs can put themselves in the MINK League Championship with just one win in Sunday's doubleheader with the Mudcats.
St. Joseph slapped 17 hits while nine different players drove in runs. Kyle Richards and Trent Hill led all hitters with two RBIs, while five different Clarinda pitchers gave up runs.
Josh Cassidy started the scoring by grounding into a fielder's choice in the second. From there, St. Joseph plated three more in the third, highlighted by Joe Koerper's RBI double to the warning track.
The Mustangs' big inning came with six runs in the seventh, following Lucas Powers' solo home run. It was the first career homer in a Mustangs uniform for the St. Joseph native and just the second by a Mustang player at home this season.
Jeremiah Figueroa picked up the win, allowing two runs on seven hits over six innings.
