Shields Rebounds, Royals Shut Out Rays

James Shields strikes out 10 batters in second-ever meeting with former club in a 6-0 win.
(ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.) After giving up at least four runs or seven of his last eight starts, James Shields bounced back with one of his best performances as a Royal on Monday.

The starter threw seven shutout innings, giving up three hits and striking out 10 batters in a 6-0 win over the Rays. It was familiar success at Tropicana Field for Shields, who remains Tampa Bay's all-time wins leader.

This marked just the second time he had pitched against his former club.

Facing Jake Odorizzi (4-8), one of the pieces in the trade that brought Shields (9-4) to Kansas City, the Royals offense responded with 14 runs to back up their starters' strong performance. Alex Gordon and Omar Infante kicked off the scoring in the third inning with an RBI apiece. Both drove in a pair of runs.

Kansas City (46-42) struck again with two runs in the eighth and ninth. Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas also recorded RBIs.
