Vargas Suffers First Loss with Royals

Justin Verlander no-hits Kansas City for 5 2/3 innings, helps secure 9-4 win in series finale.
(KANSAS CITY, Mo.) The Royals continued their struggles with the American League Central on Sunday.

12 of the team's 15 losses entering the day had come in the division, and the series finale with Detroit, a 9-4 loss, proved to be their fifth defeat in five tries against the reigning Central champions this season. It also marks the first time this year the Royals have scored four runs in losing fashion.

Justin Verlander (4-1) took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning before Billy Butler slapped a two-out, two-strike single into right. Verlander finished with seven strikeouts while allowing three runs on four hits over seven frames.

Kansas City (14-16) plated three of their runs in the seventh via a two-run Jarrod Dyson triple and a sacrifice fly from Nori Aoki. By that point, the Tigers already owned seven runs, all off Jason Vargas (2-1).

The lefty surrendered 11 hits including two homers over five innings in his first loss with the Royals. Nick Castellanos and Alex Avila went dep for Detroit (17-9).

Aoki notched his second RBI with a single to drive in Mike Moustakas in the ninth.
