MWSU Men Stumble against Emporia State

The Griffons rally but fall late to the Hornets 87-80, dropping back to .500.
(EMPORIA, Kan.) In search of his first MIAA road win, Brett Weiberg and his bunch couldn't complete a second-half rally.

Kaleb Wright posted 28 points on 11-of-19 shooting as Emporia State defeated the Griffons 87-80 on Wednesday.

MWSU (7-7, 2-4) was still adjusting to playing with out post players Cedric Clinkscales, no longer with the team, and Dzenan Mrkaljevic, who is day-to-day with a knee injury. It showed as the Griffons were outscored 60-32 in the paint and lost the rebounding battle 44-30.

Ryan Devers topped MWSU with eight rebounds and 21 points, three of which came on a successful half-court heave that pulled the Griffons within one point to close out the first half. MWSU led by as many as five in the first 20 minutes.

The Hornets (10-6, 3-3) jumped out to an eight-point lead midway through the second half, but couldn't keep the Griffons from hanging around. Terrence Moore added 20 points for ESU, while Gavin Brown and Paul Bunch each poured in 12.

Hans Thun tallied 18 for the Griffons, who shot 39 percent from the field.
