Missouri Western announced Friday morning that Smith will take over as the new head women's tennis coach.
Northwest Missouri State alumnus Raven Searcy will aid him as the Griffons graduate assistant. Smith replaces former tennis coach Ron Selkirk.
"I certainly do not profess to have the expertise that Coach Selkirk has, but what I can bring to the table is 46 years of coaching experience at the college level," Smith said in a press release.
Smith coached basketball for 38 years, 25 at Missouri Western, and was inducted into the MIAA Hall of Fame in June after retiring at the end of the 2012-13 season.
The Griffon tennis team went 6-16 in 2013, and have just three conference wins in the last two seasons combine.
