From Green Right Now Reports
It’s the most wonderful (shopping) time of the year.
Unless you fear being trampled by mall mobs, freezing to death while waiting in line for the 5 a.m. $39 Blu-Ray player special or being tasered during police crowd control maneuvers at the nearby Walmart.
If you envision a gentler, more meaningful experience, try to hang on until Tuesday, Nov. 29. That’s when Green America wants to help consumers shop ethically and gracefully this holiday season. The business certifying organization is testing the waters for a “Green Tuesday” during which shoppers will be able to choose from selected items sold online by eco-friendly, socially conscious companies among Green America’s membership of 160,000 approved green businesses.
Last year, Green America organized Green Deals.org to give eco-shoppers alternatives to Big Boxes and mall mayhem.
This season they’re trying to secure eco-conscious shopping its own place on the calendar with Green Tuesday.
Green America’s Corporate Responsibility Director Todd Larsen believes the event will catch on.
“I think a lot of consumers are tired of the Black Friday rush to holiday shopping and are looking for a shopping season that's more sustainable for the planet and for their own lives,” Larsen said.
“Green Tuesday encourages people to buy green for the holidays. It also encourages people to slow down and fit holiday shopping into their lives, not the other way round. Through Green Deals and other online green shopping options (such as our Green Pages) people can do much of their green shopping online, at their leisure.”
After the Green Tuesday launch, Green America will continue to feature specials at the GreenDeals website for several days. Initial offerings will include:
- Jewelry made from recycled nuclear bomb equipment from wartopeace.com.
- Grow-your-own indoor mushroom garden kit by Backtotheroots.com.
- Self-watering system for indoor or outdoor plants by Driwater.com.
- Organic Essence Lip Balm – USDA organic certified balm for chapped lips this winter.
- Better World Club Annual Membership – The green auto (and bicycle!) club.
- Indigenous Designs Clothing – Stylish fair trade and organic clothes for women and men.
Check in at Green America’s Facebook page for additional discounts and details from approved local and online businesses. The advocacy is promising new deals or discounts every 24-48 hours from Nov. 29-December 6. Featured products will be marked down 30 to 50 percent, with “side deals” for 10-20 percent discounts.
Green America, founded in 1982 as Co-op America, provides tools for businesses and individuals who want to solve today’s social and environmental problems. The group describes itself as “the nation’s leading green economy organization” and provides a three-tiered certification, designating member businesses at gold, silver or bronze levels.
