Chiefs Drop Preseason Opener 17-13

Alex Smith and the starting offense score the team's lone touchdown against the Saints.
(NEW ORLEANS) Alex Smith and the first-team offense did their job quickly and efficiently to earn themselves an early night on Friday.

Smith completed seven of eight passes as he lead the unit on a 15-play, 80-yard opening drive, finishing with a one-yard touchdown plunge by Jamaal Charles.

That would be the only touchdown for the Chiefs, who fell 17-13 to the Saints to begin the 2013 NFL Preseason.

Andy Reid opted to pull his starters following the successful first drive after saying earlier in the week they could play as much as a quarter.

Chase Daniel stepped in to complete six of ten passes for 42 yards plus a 14-yard run. He led Kansas City within range for Ryan Succop to boot a 42-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead late in the first quarter. He chipped in another from 32-yards early in the fourth.

Right tackle and first overall pick Eric Fisher was taken to the locker room by medical staff late in the first half to check a sore left thumb, but returned to the sideline for the second half.

In the battle for the last quarterback spot, Tyler Bray completed three of seven passes for 27 yards, but lost a fumble on his first possession. Ricky Stanzi went five for 12 for 42 yards in two possessions that ended in punts.

The kick return game showed a glimpse of what it could do with Dexter McCluster's 55-yard return and rookie Knile Davis' 77-yard return.

Vince Agnew finished with a game-high eight tackles for the Chiefs, aided by seven from Orie Lemon and another six from Husain Abdullah.

The team will hold practice back in St. Joseph at 8:15 a.m. Sunday to begin their final week of training camp at Missouri Western.
