6 People Drown Over Fourth of July Weekend

(JEFFERSON CITY) Six people drowned in accidents on Missouri lakes over the Fourth of July weekend.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 48-year-old Larry Hennier of Rich Fountain and 25-year-old Mary Talken of Jefferson City died when two boats collided nearly head-on on the Gasconade River Saturday evening.

On Saturday afternoon, Wayne Feeler of Rolla drowned while trying to retrieve a small boat that drifted out of reach on private property.

On Friday, 81-year-old Gary Gilber of Cape Girardeau drowned when he lost his balance trying to wade across the Castor River in Wayne County.

Also on the Fourth of July, 30-year-old Justin Byrd of Englewood, Colorado died when he fell off the back of a boat and into the water at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Authorities say he was under water for five minutes before others realized he was missing.
