(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.)  After three months of swimming, playing outside and having fun, today marked the last day of summer for kids in the St. Joseph School District.

Monday marks the first day of school for the thousands of kids in town.

To make the most of their final day, some kids in St. Joe played around at area parks.

At Corby Pond, a group of elementary school kids spent their afternoon catching turtles and fishing.

"We went on a nature walk. We seen a possum, and we seen acorns," said Trinity Ashlock, a third grader.

They say they've had a good summer, but are ready to go back.

"I can't wait to go because I can wear my new shoes," said Shane Ashlock, a sixth grader.

Monday will also mark the grand opening of two new elementary schools in the district.
