"I think it's time to move on to the next level," he said.
That's why Boeh is running for the Associate Circuit Judge, Division Six seat, being vacated by the retiring Ronald Taylor.
Boeh says his previous experience as both a defense lawyer and prosecutor, in addition to his years on the bench, gives him an edge over the other three candidates running in the Democratic primary.
"I know how to run a court," Boeh said. "I know how to run special dockets. I know how to treat people. I know how to handle witnesses. I know how to handle defendants. I know how to make victims whole when they need to be made whole."
During his 13 years in Municipal Court, Boeh has ruled on thousands of cases. He says he often gets satisfaction from his job when running into people who have come through his courtroom.
"And they'll say, 'Hey, Judge! I paid my court costs, I paid my fines, I quit drinking, I got into a drug treatment program, I'm not doing drugs anymore. I've got a job and I'm supporting my family.'"
"Those are the victories a judge has and those are the victories I think I've had," he said.
People who have watched Boeh on the bench see him as a fair man who deserves to be an associate circuit judge.
(SOT: CRAIG MOORE, CAMPAIGN SUPPORTER) "He's earned it," said Craig Moore, a longtime friend of Boeh, who supports his campaign. "He can make a fair and be firm when he has to be, but yet he's very compassionate. He can make a compassionate, fair decision."
"If the city is better off because John Boeh has been your Municipal Judge, then that's what I'm going to take through to the Associate Judge level," Boeh said.
Boeh is running in the Democratic primary against Gary Myers, Chad Gaddie and Michael Insco.
The election is August 5th.
