(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Area law enforcement officers and their families took time Thursday night to pay tribute to officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The local Fraternal Order of Police held a candlelight vigil at Civic Center Park in St. Joseph.

The event is part of Peace Officers Memorial Day honoring officers killed in the line of duty.

"The minute a law enforcement officer puts on that uniform, he's in danger," said Bill Albertson, vice president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 3 of St. Joseph.

"There are people that will attack him just for that reason because he's wearing a uniform," he said. "The danger doesn't stop with different calls at work, different situations like domestic violence, people shooting, people with guns."

This was the 14th year for the candlelight vigil and ceremony.
