(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Despite rain in the morning, a group of kids at the Broadmoor Apartments read Tuesday afternoon as part of H.O.P.E. Outreaches summer reading program.

"I do know over the summer months if the reading isn't continued, children can regress and this helps to prevent some of the regression," said Pastor Ernestine Blakley.

Blakley and some volunteers from the church read to kids and handed out popsicles.

She said the program gives kids an opportunity to read during the summer months when they are out of school.

Each kid received two free storybooks to practice on their own after the reading session.

The reading program takes place at various locations throughout the summer:

Tuesdays:
Broadmoor Apartments-- June 10, June 17, June 24 and July 1
1:00-1:45 p.m.

Wednesdays:
Oakridge Apartments--June 11, June 18, June 25 and July 2
1:00-1:45 p.m.

Thursdays:
Brittany Village Apartments--June 12, June 19, June 26 and July 3
1:30-2:15 p.m.
