(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.)  City pools may be in jeopardy, again because the city is having trouble attracting patrons to the water park.

"It was a bad summer. Our pools attendance just dropped," stated Bill McKinney, director of the parks and rec department.

With Krug and Hyde pools closed due to a shortage of lifeguards, pool attendance to the city's aquatic park is down.

Although the final numbers for the summer aren't available yet, the city projects the pool could possibly have a low impact financially.

"When the numbers are in, that the aquatic park is less numbers this year than last year," added McKinney.

Although the park is offering discounted rates two days a week, the city says that's simply still not enough to keep visitors coming to the park.

"Just to get their numbers up. Those four and five-hundred person days was usually on those days, half price days," said McKinney.

Another major factor in low attendance this summer were the unpredictable changes in the weather.  McKinney also said, "We had a lot of rain this summer. When people get in, the waters too cold."

But cool temperatures didn't damper the spirits of some kids who still visited the park despite cloudy weather. Although they were the only ones at the park Friday, they say are making the best of the final days of summer.

"It's kinda weird cuz there's usually more people when it first opens," said Katelyn Lawhon of St. Joseph.

"You get to do more things and have more room but it's actually funner with more people cuz you have more people to hang out with and meet new friends," stated Jaylee Fernandez.

Still, with the future of the parks up in the air, only time will tell where the pools are headed.

"From now until next summer is when we'll have meetings and decide that very issue. Right now there hasn't been a real clear cut what we're gonna do," said Mckinney.
