(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) The August primary brought a slow start for election officials in Buchanan County Tuesday.

As of 11 o'clock, voter turnout was at 8.5 percent. That adds up to about 4,600 of the county's nearly 54,000 registered voters.

Buchanan County Clerk Mary Baack-Garvey said the number is quite low.

"I hope it picks up and we hit the average of 22 to 24 percent at least," she said.

Baack-Garvey had hoped for a 30 percent turnout.

The polls are open until 7 p.m. Tuesday.
