(MARYVILLE, Mo.) Northwest Missouri was hit hard with crazy weather on Thursday.

Strong winds and rain turned into sleet then snow. Those fierce winds caused a lot of damage to a nearby airport.

"Three hangars that got damaged. One large hangar that had two airplanes in it. Totally knocked it down," said Kevin Rankin, Airport Manager at Northwest Missouri Regional Airport.

Winds gusting to about 50 miles per hour blew through Maryville, causing severe damage to the Northwest Missouri Regional Airport.

"We had another hangar that took the roof off and damaged the airplane in that hangar. And, the airplane that was tied into that, it totally knocked it down and substantially damaged that airplane as well," said Rankin.

A total of two hangars were damaged, along with four airplanes.

"All the hangars had insurance and the airplanes were all insured. So, I've gotten a hold of all the owners, and we're in the process of getting a hold of the insurance companies and talking to them," said Rankin.

Rankin estimated about $500,000 worth of damage at the airport.

The city of Maryville, however,  is not financially responsible for covering that cost.

"That need to be repaired, replaced or one of the two. We haven't got in to them close enough to figure out for sure what we could do with them yet," said Rankin.

Rankin said he will wait until Friday, or Saturday to begin cleaning the mess.

Despite the wrath of winter taking a toll on the airport, he remains in high spirits.
"It's been a tough winter for everybody. And, this was not something we were expecting," said Rankin."

One of the damaged planes is used for flying lessons, and another is owned by Northwest Missouri State University.

There are 22 airplanes at the airport.

All of them, except the university plane, are privately owned.
