(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) First responders were called to a house fire in St. Joseph's Midtown area early Wednesday morning.

Fire crews arrived at the home on 19th Street just before 1:30 a.m. to see flames expanding on the first floor and smoke overtaking the entire house.

Two of the home's three occupants were sleeping when the fire began.  Everyone was able to escape safely thanks to working smoke alarms.

Firefighters had the blaze under control by 2:30 a.m. The home is expected to be a total loss.

Fire inspectors are working to determine a cause.

The Red Cross is assisting residents displaced by the fire.
