(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.)  St. Joseph fire crews worked throughout the evening battling a house fire in the 4400 block of Douglas.

Two people were inside the house at the time of the fire but were able to get out safely.

Crews were called to the scene around 6:30 and the fire quickly spread upstairs and to the roof.

Three fire engines were called.

Battalion Chief Paris Jenkins said the fire was tough to battle.

"Now the attic has trust construction, five to seven we had to pull our crews out for their own safety," said Jenkins.

Crews were able to re-enter the house after it cooled down.

They said it is still too early to tell how it started.
