(ANDREW COUNTY, Mo.) Distracted driving played a part in a rural Andrew County accident that sent a woman to the hospital Tuesday morning.

According to Sgt. Corey Root, with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 39-year-old St. Joseph woman looked down while approaching a curve on Highway W and drove off the road. Her vehicle hit several trees and went down an embankment before coming to a stop.

The woman's four-year-old daughter was also in the vehicle along with two dogs, but none of them were hurt.

"Obviously, seat belts save lives and this is a story right here that obviously, wearing your seat belt payed off for both people in this crash," said Sgt. Root.

The woman suffered moderate injuries. The child was sitting in an approved safety seat, which Sgt. Root says also helped her escape unharmed.
