ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- It's a teacher's ultimate reward - seeing a student take a lesson from the classroom to real life.

Lafayette High School teacher Derek Frieling and senior Lauren Grundberg shared that experience this week during a presentation at East Hills Library in St. Joseph.

The pair worked together over the last year on a World War II project that earned them a trip to Washington D.C. then on to Normandy, France.

They got to experience history in a way most never will, so they wanted to give others a chance to see it from their eyes.

"This has really changed my perspective on us servicemen and women. I have a much greater respect for them. I know see what our veterans have went through," said Grundberg.

"Being able to experience history where it happened was the best part of it," added Frieling.

The history project was one of 15 selected out of 100 applications.
