(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) The tight race between three candidates for two open seats on St. Joseph's Board of Education, is now over.

Kappy Hodges and Lori Prussman will take over for Sarah Siemens and Sue Wagner, who did not seek re-election. Hodges (8,453 votes) and Prussman (8,414) defeated Jeff Bird (8,055).

Hodges said her work experience, and experience with community organizations will benefit the board.

She also said communication is most important with student families, SJSD staff and the rest of the community.

She wants board members to become more involved in "Town Hall" settings, in different parts of the district. She also wants to create an easier way for parents to receive information from the district.

Prussman has worked, and volunteered in the school district for more than 20 years.

She feels her community experience will help her judgement when making decisions for the board.

Prussman said her main focus, as a board member, is "what's best for your kids, what's best for your staff and what's best for your community."

She said she will continue to advocate for students, and be a voice for St. Joseph.

Both candidates said their first order of business, is getting to the bottom of the district's stipend issue.

"We need to look at the transparency of the district and what all's going on with the finances, stipends, all this stuff. We really need to address some of these issues right away," said Kappy Hodges.

"I think we need to look at the stipends, and I think we really need to address that. We need to really investigate, and I think we're going to have to get through this audit. The audit is a big deal. So, there's a lot of things that need to happen, immediately, for us to be able to move forward in our district," said Lori Prussman.

The newly elected candidates will be sworn in on Thursday.

Both said they are ready to serve the district for the next six years.
