(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Thursday brought a big shopping day for families at the Salvation Army in St. Joseph.

The annual Back to School Fair welcomed hundreds of kids.

The Salvation Army partners with the United Way and other agencies to help families stock up on school supplies and connect with other resources.

The items were sorted and ready for the families when they arrived Thursday morning.

The event gives kids a chance to head back to school with everything they need.

"We kind of house it, but it's way past our borders. It's uh, this is a community effort here. It would not happen without the United Way, without all these agencies coming out and spending the day, sending their representatives out. All those things make this thing what it is," said Capt. Chuck Cook, Salvation Army.

The United Way collected more than 20,000 school supplies during the Stuff the Bus drive last weekend. The items were sorted by grade level to help meet the need.
