(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) There's a push by Missouri lawmakers to get college students vaccinated against meningitis.

A committee endorsed a bill that would require all students living on college campuses to be vaccinated against meningitis starting in July 2015.

Exemptions would be allowed for religious or medical reasons.
Missouri Western and Northwest already require students living on campus to get the vaccine.

Health officials say college students are one of the groups most at risk for getting meningitis.

"How many times at school do people swap food or utensils, especially when you go into a dorm and you have never lived in a dorm room before. Just the communal living tends to increase that risk," said St. Joseph Health Department Clinic Supervisor Connie Werner."

Meningitis symptoms can appear similar to the flu including, fever, headaches and neck stiffness.
