(LEAVENWORTH, Kan.) The Leavenworth Police Department has identified a girl shot and killed on Friday night.

Police Chief Pat Kitchens said 5-year-old Cadence Harris was abducted on Friday evening in Atchison, but did not go into detail around the circumstances of the kidnapping.

The kidnapping suspect fled from police, crossing into Platte County, and then returning to Kansas in Leavenworth.

"There was an initial attempt to stop," said Pat Kitchens, Leavenworth Police Chief. "That apparently ended. Then there was another additional attempt by a different law enforcement agency, that ended ultimately ended up in the city of Leavenworth."

In Leavenworth, the suspect got into a shoot out with police and was wounded.

Harris was shot and killed. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said Saturday afternoon they do not believe an officer's shots hit the girl.

Kitchens said the suspect knew Harris, but would not elaborate on their relationship.

He said an Amber Alert was not issued because of how quickly the events unfolded.

"I'll just reiterate the tragic nature of this event," Kitchens said. "Any time we have the loss of a small child it's devastating."
