(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) We've heard so much about there being a shortage of lifeguards in the area but never about the process or cost. With so many pools closed, many are left wondering what does it take to become certified.

The YMCA offers lifeguard training which includes 25 hours of training. Those in training must know how to swim and be able to respond quickly.

Since there's so much to learn, the YMCA says they spend as much time as needed in training.

"Life guarding is no longer just a stand out there and hold the tube and twirl the whistle. You happen to be aware of the environment and the members and be observant at all times," said Monica Ottman, program director at the YMCA.

The cost for lifeguard training classes is $230. That price also includes certifications for CPR, first aid, a mask and training book.
