(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Finding a job has not been easy for teens in the United States.

"Tough because it's been my first job. I haven't had a job yet, and this will be my first job," said Allie Nelson.

Nelson, a St. Joseph resident, spent the last six months looking for work.

However, the 17-year-old knew her employment status would soon change.

She, along with more than two dozen other teens, attended St. Joseph's Youth Alliance job fair with high hopes.

"The job fair helps a lot. I would really say it helps a lot because it kind of gives you an idea what you're going to walk into," said Christopher Loyd.

They prepared for this moment through the Youth Employment Program.

"They help you a lot. They get you clothes, anything you need. Rides, they help you find a job, resume, they teach you how to prepare for an interview. It really helps," said Nelson.

"They need somebody to help them, understand what they're supposed to do, how to conduct themselves and how to be successful in jobs," said Patti Long, Communications and Public Relations for St. Joseph Youth Alliance.

A recent study shows teens face the toughest job market on record.

Only 26 percent of teenagers, ages 16 to 19, had a job in 2011.

"There's a need for more jobs out there, for the teens and youth," said Long.

Long said that is why their program is around.

They teach teens how to prepare for an interview.

"Completing their resume, and filling out the actual forms. To how to conduct themselves in the interview, how to dress, what steps to they need to take to help secure employment," she said.

Nelson said it is because of the Youth Employment Program, that she was able to face employers with hopes of no longer being unemployed.
