The Missouri Department of Transportation reminds drivers to be prepared to slow down for road construction. This is a busy time of year on the state's highways as crews try to catch up on projects like patching, striping and mowing.
Drivers should expect delays and be ready to slow down.
"Distracted driving is one of the bigger issues we have," said Larry Jacobsen, MoDOT resident engineer. "Following too close is also an issue, which leads to not having enough time to react when something slows down."
As part of Work Zone Awareness Week, MoDOT hopes reminders like this will help reduce the number of accidents.
"We are constantly trying to protect our employees, but the drivers coming through our work zones are the ones we rely on to pay attention to get through our work zones safely," said Jeremy Bexten, APAC.
Last year in Missouri, eight people were killed in work zones. More than 2,700 have been injured in work zones since 2000.
