Maier is still shaken a day after an her neighbor, John Weipert, was shot outside his home.
She and other neighbors watched it all unfold.
"The gunshots were very, it was just very kind of shocking very scary," said Regan Cornelius, who lives next door.
Police responded to a domestic disturbance call at the home.
"My daughter told me he had a gun to get back in the house," added Maier.
They say they found Weipert intoxicated, armed with a gun and threatening suicide.
Neighbors say Weipert's girlfriend was there when police arrived.
"They were outside they weren't yelling just kind of seemed like the women were at the end of the drive and he was at the top. There was just some conversating going back and forth and it got a little bit intense there for a second," said Cornelius.
"There was never a scuffle or a fight or a screaming, nothing," added Maier.
Just as neighbors thought officers had the situation under control, they heard gunfire.
"I've never ever experienced anything like this before in my life. In my head i was thinking they can't be bullets, maybe they're just sand bags"
Maier lives across the street from Weipert.
She says he was friendly and kept to himself.
"I seen him yesterday afternoon riding his Harley. He was quiet. No parties, no noise, no disturbance," said Maier.
She says in her 47 years living on 41st street, she's never seen anything like this.
"It's unbelievable," she said.
Neighbors say Weipert moved in the home almost 3 years ago.
St. Joseph Police along with the Missouri State Highway Patrol are investigating the case.
